I don’t know about you, but I sit and watch the makeover shows on HGTV for hours on end. I dream that someone would ring the doorbell and offer to update my room for me.
As awesome as a makeover would be, I know that it is also very expensive. Most of us can’t afford to do that, so we are left to just live what what we’ve got. Or are we?
I previously shared a post about how you can update your home on a budget. I then turned around and did some updates myself!
I actually surprised my husband while he was out of town one weekend. It took a full Saturday (around 18 hours), but the end result was amazing!!! Best of all, the room has a new look and it cost us so little money!
The most important thing I wanted to mention is the face that we did not paint the walls. This was all just cosmetic updates which gave our room a brand new, fresh look.
You can see in this photo (sorry the first was blurry – didn’t realize it until AFTER I did the redo), that we moved the furniture around. Just by putting the furniture in a new place, it gave the room a different look.
I also updated the lampshades (kept the same bases). I even swapped out some accessories around the room (including on the mantel).
This biggest change to the room was the curtains. We removed a dark, heavy cornice and curtains and replaced them with a new rod and striped ones instead. It brightened the room instantly and made it appear so much bigger. This was the most expensive change, but one which was well worth it.
This one is probably my most favorite change in the room. I had photos of my family in a collage I had purchased previously, but it didn’t have the look I really wanted. I purchased this vinyl wall art and a two frames (I found other frames in different rooms in the house and moved them to the family room). By putting up the new saying and some new frames, the wall took on an entirely new look.
So, how much did we spend to completely update our room? Here is a breakdown of what we added
- New curtains – $300
- New lamp shades – free (a gift)
- New accessories (pillows, photos) – $100 (part of this was a gift as well)
- New lamp – free (gift)
- New wall arrangement – $50
- New furniture layout – free
Our grand total was $450!!!
You can simply transform a room without spending too much money. Like I said – no paint and no new furniture. I did everything in a matter of a few hours on a Saturday afternoon and I now have a space which I absolutely LOVE — and even my family agrees with me!
