Letter S
We are continuing with our series on how to save on groceries — even if you don’t have a coupon! Â These items below are things we need, and we purchase, even if we don’t have a coupon or one is never available. Â Here are a few food items, beginning with the letter “S” which you can purchase in bulk when you find a great deal!
Yum – strawberries!! Â These can be enjoyed even in when not in season, if you correctly store them:
- Fresh strawberries are good for up to 3 days in your refrigerator after purchased.
- Make sure that you do not wash your berries until you are ready to eat them as the excess moisture can make them rot more quickly.
- To free them, wash and remove the caps and stems. Â Add 3/4 cup of sugar to each quarter and stir until dissolved. Â Store in air tight containers for up to 12 months.
- Sour cream will be good for up to 14 days after the “sell by” date on your package.
- Do not freeze sour cream – it does not work well after it has been frozen.
During the fall you can find some really good deals on sugar. Â So, how much should you stockpile at a time? Â It depends upon how much baking you will do. Â Here are some storage tips:
- When kept in a cool dry area, tightly sealed, it will last indefinitely.
- To keep it from hardening, place it in an airtight container and cover with a large sealed plastic bag.
Here are tips to extend the life of your next spinach purchase:
- Fresh spinach usually lasts for around 5 days. Â Do not wash it until you are ready to use (or it may spoil sooner).
- To free, cut off of stems and wash. Â Blanch in boiling water for two minutes and then chill quickly in cold water. Â Drain water/moisture and then store into freezer bags where it can last up to 12 months.
