If you have kids, you probably hear the words “Tell me a story” over and over again. And of course, they want it to be something different. It can be a challenge to come up with a new idea unless you create a rock story.
I came up with a fun interactive way to create a story. I developed these story rocks, also called story stones. They are fun because they make sure your story is different every single time. Plus, your kids get to have a part as they will pull a rock from the sack, which makes them part of the fun.
WHAT ARE STORY STONES
Story stones are rocks or stones with pictures on them. To start, have your child pull a stone from the bag. Make up a tale about that item after a minute or so, have your child pull another rock from the bag and add that item to your story.
For example, if you pull out a dog first, talk about the dog and what he looks like and some of his favorite things to do. Talk about him talking a walk and seeing ——– a fire truck (the next stone pulled from the bag). Share how the dog followed the fire truck through the town. Continue pulling out more rocks and adding to your story to make it unique and one-of-a-kind.
Take turns with your kids and have them come up with ideas to add to the story or let them make their own with the rocks they pull from the bag. It’s a fun way to get your mind thinking and promote creativity.
STORY ROCK IDEAS FOR KIDS
The great thing about making story stones is that you don’t need to be an artist! Come up with 10 – 15 different ideas to paint on your stones. Some of these include:
Dog
Cat
Bird
House
Truck
Car
Balloon
Boy
Girl
Hat
Cowboy Boot
Fish
Snake
Mountain
Forest
Mouse
School
Bike
Crayons
The ideas are endless! Get your kids involved in coming up with some creative things to paint on your rocks.

HOW TO MAKE STORY ROCKS
SUPPLIES
Rocks
Acrylic Paint
Brush
Clean off each rock and allow it to dry. Use the paints to add pictures to each rock. Don’t worry if they aren’t perfect as your kids will not care. Create 10 – 20 rocks. Once dried add 5 – 10 rocks into a bag. If you paint 20 rocks, you will have four bags.
Now your child can grab a story rock bag and see where their imagination takes them. After a while, empty the rocks and mix them up again to make completely new tales and ideas.
Make a few so you can keep one in your purse or diaper bag, one in the car and others at home. That way, when you are out and about, you and your kids can still make fun stories (which can really help pass the time).
