It is very easy to save money at Target. You need to understand the different ways that you can do just that!
I love to save money at Target – who doesn’t? But, how can you save big money? There are several tips, coupons and tricks that I use to ensure I always save money at Target, every time I shop.
TARGET COUPONS
Coupons are the simplest way to save money, no matter where you shop.
Manufacturer Coupons
The coupons you see in the weekly paper and most printable coupon websites are manufacturer’s coupons. That means these coupons can be redeemed at any store that accepts coupons – not just one store.
Target Store Coupons
You may also find coupons that are Target store coupons. These are most frequently located in the pages of the weekly Target ad. You can tell these are store coupons as they will say “Target Store Coupon” on them, include the store logo and will not have any type of remittance details.
Target Cartwheel Coupons
The most common type of Target coupon is the Target Cartwheel. These are coupons that save you money on every purchase. You can use them on your phone, or print out a scannable barcode to use at checkout (read more about How to Use Target Cartwheel).
Registry Coupons
When you complete a baby, wedding or college registry, you will receive a coupon to save 15% off in the store and a code to save 15% off on-line. See the registry details for additional information.
REDCard Coupons
Each year, on your REDCard anniversary, you will receive a coupon for 10% off your purchase (must opt-in to marketing e-mails).
Mobile Coupons
Target offers mobile coupons. These are most often found on the Target app. These can be shown to the cashier at checkout and will be scanned for additional savings.
You can also find offers in the weekly ad (and on signs within the store). These offers will advise you to text a code to 827-438 (Target’s text number). Once you send the text, you will receive the offer back on your phone, which can also be shown and scanned at checkout.
Coupons on your receipt
Sometimes coupons will print directly on your receipt, or on a secondary receipt that prints at checkout. Always look yours over before tossing it into the trash.
WEEKLY IN-STORE DEALS
Target Weekly Ad
Each Sunday, Target releases it’s weekly ad. You can find this in your local newspaper, displayed on a board inside your local store and even on the Target website.
It is important that you visit the store and check beneath the weekly sticker tag. Sometimes, items are not on sale, but are just advertised in the weekly ad. Only purchase items that are on sale.
Match Weekly Deals with Coupons and Target Cartwheel
As mentioned above, coupons, Target coupons and Target Cartwheel are great ways to save money. Combine these with the current weekly deals in your local store to make a good deal even better!
INSIDER TIPS TO SAVING AT THE STORE
There are some simple tricks you can use when shopping at their store to save even more!
Watch the End Caps
This is where Target places items on clearance. When you shop, take a minute to look at these in each department. Best of all, you can still use coupons on items on clearance – making for an even better deal!
Shop Seasonal Clearance
At the end of each holiday season, Target puts all seasonal merchandise on sale. They usually follow a cycle on when they will reduce items:
- 1 – 2 days after the holiday: 50% off*
- 3 – 6 days after the holiday: 75% off*
- 7+ days after the holiday: 90% off*
*This is a general guide and not every store will adhere to this schedule. Take the time to shop your store and learn their own mark down schedule.
TARGET COUPON CODES & ON-LINE DEALS
If you need to shop on-line, there are often codes you can use to save even more. They also usually offer the in-store weekly promotions on their website as well.

TARGET COUPON POLICY
Can you use more than one coupon?
You can use one manufacturer’s coupon (paper or Cartwheel digital), one Target coupon (paper or digital), and one Cartwheel coupon per item, unless otherwise indicated.
Are you limited to the number of coupons you can redeem?
You are limited to using 4 identical coupons per household, per day. However, if the coupon has additional restrictions (i.e. limit of 2 coupons per transaction), then those rules are followed.
If I find a coupon or Target Cartwheel coupon that I forgot to use, or found after I purchased, can I go to Guest Services to get a credit?
All coupons including Target store, manufacturer and Cartwheel coupons, must be shown to the cashier at the time of purchase. They cannot be applied to prior purchases.
Does Target accept expired coupons?
No, they do not.
What if the value of the coupon is greater than the price — will I get cash back?
If your coupon value is greater than the purchase price, the coupon value will be applied up to the price. For example, if the item is on sale for $.75 and the coupon value is $1, your coupon will only deduct $0.75.
Target does not give cash back, nor do they apply any coupon overages towards your overall transaction.
Does Target accept competitor retail coupons?
No, they do not.
Does Target accept Buy One Get One (BOGO) Free coupons?
Yes they do. However, in order to redeem the coupon, you must purchase 2 of the items listed on the coupon. One item is the regular (or sale) price and the other will be free.
Can you use two BOGO coupons together?
Target does not allow you to combine BOGO coupons. For example, you can not use two Buy One Get one Free coupons and end up getting both items for free.
If you have two BOGO coupons to use, then, that would require you to purchase 4 items — two would be at the regular or sales price and the other two would be free.
Can you use an additional coupon with a BOGO coupon?
There are restrictions when using value off coupons in addition with BOGO coupons:
- You cannot use a manufacturer’s coupon with a BOGO coupon. For example, if you have a BOGO on shampoo and a $0.50 off shampoo, you cannot use them together.
- If your BOGO is a Target store coupon, you can use one manufacturer’s coupon towards the purchase of the first item.
- You can use a Target store coupon with a BOGO coupon. The Target coupon will be applied to the purchase of the first item.
What happens if I return an item I purchased with a coupon or Target Cartwheel coupon?
The amount of the refund will be reduced by the value of the coupon redeemed. If your item was $5 and you used a coupon that saved $1, then your refund would be $4.
How do I get percentage off coupons to use at Target?
When you complete your baby, wedding or college registry, you will receive a 15% off coupon to use on one in-store transaction and a coupon code to save 15% on-line. This can be used towards the purchase of additional items on your registry and cannot be used on other items. The coupons are provided upon completion, which varies for each type of registry (review restrictions on each for more information).
If you have a REDCard, and have opted into marketing e-mails, you may be eligible for a 10% store coupon on your anniversary each year. Your account must be in good standing and you must be the primary cardholder. The coupon is valid for about one month after it is issued. Make sure to read the coupon for exclusions.
How do I get store coupons mailed to my home address?
If you created a registry or have a REDcard, you will often receive coupons in the mail. Coupons are also often sent to those who have created a Target account (which is free).
More information about using coupons:
- All coupons must have a scannable barcode.
- The item must match the coupon description including brand, size, quantity, etc.
- Target coupons, Cartwheel manufacturer coupons, and Cartwheel offers cannot be used on products sold by CVS.
- They do not accept manufacturer coupons with no matching requirements (e.g. 992 family code).
TARGET CARTWHEEL COUPONS
What are Target Cartwheel coupons?
Target Cartwheel coupons are additional savings offers on select products throughout the store.
How do you redeem a Target Cartwheel coupon?
You can show the offer on your phone, which provides a scannable barcode. If you do not have a smartphone, you can generate a printable coupon to take with you to the store.

TARGET REDCARD
Is the REDCard a credit card or a debt card?
Target offers both options. When applying for your REDCard, you can opt for either a credit card or a debit card.
How much do you save with your REDcard?
Your REDcard will save you 5% off of every purchase*, every day both in the store and on-line. In addition, all order ship for free online, when you pay using your RECard.
*See REDcard fine print for items excluded from the discount.
Are there perks to having a REDcard?
When you make a purchase with your REDcard, you are given an additional 30 days to make your returns. The policy is 90 days, but purchases made with your card extend that to 120 days. The only exclusions are Target mobile purchases, purchases with a fixe return date or non-returnable items.
REDcard holders are also offered early access to select events, products and promotions (collectively, “early access offers”). This may not be granted to every cardholder, but might be based upon location or prior purchases.
Each year, on your REDcard anniversary, you will receive a coupon for a 10% discount (but you must opt-in to receive marketing e-mails).
REDcard holders are also sometimes offered exclusive extras such as special items, gifts and offers (collectively, “exclusive extras”). Every exclusive extra may not be available to every REDcard holder, and the selection of REDcard holders for a specific exclusive extra may be based on criteria, such as previous purchases or geographic location.
