When we had our Meet the Teacher night this past week, the kindergarten teachers shared a fun surprise for the kids. They handed all of them a bag of confetti (aka stars) and a note. They were given strict instructions not to open any of it until the night before school started.
So, Tuesday evening, my son took his bath, brushed his teeth and climbed into his bed. Then, I opened the note and read it to him. This is what it said:
The night before school is exciting and fun.
There are always so many things to be done.
Your clothes are ready, your backpack is too.
Your classroom is full of fun things you will do.
Lots of questions go through your mind,
All types of thoughts of every kind.
But sometimes we all get the jitters down deep
And that makes it hard to fall fast asleep.
So I’ve made this magic confetti for you,
Full of promises for the whole year through.
On Tuesday night, when you lay down your head,
Just sprinkle some under your pillow in bed.
The confetti will help you sleep through the night
And wake up in the morning fresh and bright.
I’ll sprinkle the confetti under my pillow too,
Because I am so super excited to see you too!
Sweet Dreams!
Once we read the poem, my son opened the baggie and place his confetti under his pillow. The excitement on his face knowing that it would help him sleep so he could have a great first day of school was just priceless!
While this idea was great for the first day of school, the idea could easily be adapted for any event – like a birthday, holidays or even a trip! What special things do you do for your kids to mark the start of another school year.

I coach my daughter’s cheerleading squad (Kindergarten & 1st graders) and we have a big competition toward the end of the year. I think the girls will love this the night before competition!!

Awwweeeeeee! What a sweet idea!. I only wish I’d come across your site a long time ago. (Not sure when you started it. It may not have even existed then but perhaps a dream : ) Anyway, my son was born in the 90’s & now he’s starting his senior year. *GULP!* Don’t think he’d appreciate it like the little ones. *hee*

My 6 year old daughter had open house yesterday and her 1st grade teacher had prepared this for her students. Certainly had no fuss out of her when it was bedtime. It brought a BIG smile on her face as she sprinkled the confetti under her pillow. When she went to make her bed this morning, she put it all back in her little package so she could do it again Sunday night at bed time. Can’t wait to hear about her day this evening. Such a cute idea.
