In this scenario, however, there’s no guarantee that your garage sale will make you good money. It will help get rid of the household items you don’t use anymore; it might not make you much money.

Thankfully, I know a way to achieve both ends: declutter your home and make money at your next garage sale.

What Is a Garage Sale?

You may have also heard it referred to as a yard sale. A garage sale is an opportunity for you to get rid of (by selling) some of your secondhand household items from your home.

They are also referred to as yard sales because they are often quite literally held in someone’s yard. The deal is simple:

• Collect everything you don’t use anymore
• Choose a Saturday or Sunday (weekends work best)
• Put up a yard sale sign on your front lawn
• Let the neighbors or passersby give you their money for your old stuff

When I say “old stuff,” I exaggerate a little. While it’s true that most people put a lot of their old stuff up for sale in a garage sale, it’s also true that you can find some excellent, hardly used items on the list. It all depends on your luck and how good you are at finding the right garage sales in your area.

How to Make the Most Money From Your Garage Sale

Every yard sale shopper I know, including myself, goes to these things to get an excellent deal on items that would otherwise cost them half a kidney in a regular store.

I once bought a beautiful car seat (the one my last born used) for close to nothing at a garage sale I found on the Facebook marketplace. I mean, Amazon had an original retail price of $349, and I got it for a mind-blowing $30.

It was practically brand new, and it worked perfectly. When I say I love garage sales, this is what I’m talking about.

But today, we are not here to talk about how to get the best deals at a garage sale; we are here to help you learn about what to sell at a yard sale, how to have a successful one, and make the most money.

So, what should you sell at your next yard sale?

1. Car Seats

I bet you saw this coming. Of course, I was going to start with car seats; that was by far one of the best deals I ever made. On the flip side, however, I believe the seller also got a pretty decent return.

I mean, what are you going to do with your old baby car seats? You can’t exactly re-gift them (well, you can, but some people don’t like that). You can’t use them anymore (unless you are planning to have any more kids—I know I’m not!).

The next best thing is to stick a big, bright “For Sale” sign with a nice price tag on it when you hold your next garage sale. This way, you can get rid of it and still make some extra cash.

Considering how expensive these things are (anything from $199 to $350 plus), even if you stick a $100 price tag on a “good as new” baby car seat, I believe you’ll have some inquiries, if not an outright sale.

Remember, though, the car seat should be within the date listed on the seat itself and not expired, should be in good condition with all of its original parts, should have the original owner’s manual, and should not have been in any accidents.

You also want to make sure there are no recalls on it. You can do this by checking the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s list of the most recent car seat recalls.

If you aren’t confident about any of this, I highly recommend NOT selling that gently used car seat after all.

2. Baby Clothes

Baby items really are a hot commodity, and this includes baby clothes. Since you already gave them such a good deal on the car seat, they are unlikely to haggle too much on the baby clothes’ pricing.

The trick here is to make sure that the baby clothes are in good condition. This is what I do:

• Wash them thoroughly
• Have them ironed
• Fold and neatly place them in categories (pants, tops, and such)

This gives the whole set-up a “baby store” vibe, which immediately makes the clothes more attractive and pricey-looking.

This way, when you tell the buyers the actual price, they will be taken aback at how affordable they are, and many won’t even care to haggle (they know how expensive baby clothes can be)—even a lot of secondhand stores these days are a lot pricier than a new mom would expect.

3. Costume Jewelry

Do you have some costume jewelry you don’t fancy anymore? How about selling them at a garage sale and making some extra money? This is simple enough; here’s what I do:

• Pick out the jewelry I want to sell
• Make sure that everything is in good condition (any broken pieces can either be mended or thrown out – don’t sell broken jewelry at your yard sales)
• I make sure that the price sticker on each piece of jewelry is at least a third of its original cost (I price each piece individually)
• Place each piece in its display (this way, they can sell individually and make me more money as opposed to selling them as a set)

See how simple that is to do?

4. Sports Equipment

If you have sports equipment that is currently not being used but is in good condition, you have a treasure trove of garage sale items in your hands. Parents are always looking to buy their kids sports equipment.

No one wants to pay store prices because we all know little Johnny isn’t going to take care of his soccer cleats as well as he should, considering the price tag. This often makes sports equipment a hot-ticket item at most garage sales.

5. Kids’ Outdoor Toys

If your kids are all grown and no longer need their outdoor toys, put them up for sale at your next garage sale. These include:

• Kids’ tables
• Swing sets
• Monkey bars
• Sandboxes
• Bikes or scooters
• Playhouses in decent condition

All manner of outdoor toys for kids are often a hit with garage sale shoppers, especially during spring and summer. The fact that these toys tend to be quite expensive makes them quite popular, especially when someone can get them for a bargain.

6. Yard Tools

Yet another set of hot-ticket yard sale items. Here’s what I know: any time you have equipment and tools as part of your yard sale, you are almost guaranteed to have at least a couple of potential buyers coming by to check them out.

Tools, in general, can be expensive. People who work with tools on a day-to-day basis, such as roofers and gardeners, want to have more than just one set handy in case they need a replacement when they are out on the job.

One of the best ways these people find these tools and equipment while still managing to maintain a profit is by frequently running yard sale searches on the Facebook Marketplace and cruising local garage sales.

These people know exactly how expensive these tools can be when they are bought new. So, if you have some that are in good working condition, they will almost always pay anything that is just under that price, which puts you in a good position to make a lot of money.

7. Outdoor Furniture

This one’s a little tricky since everyone’s taste is different. Nevertheless, outdoor furniture can make you good money if you price it right. I’m talking about things like picnic tables, lawn chairs, and such.

Just make sure they are all clean and in good working condition. In this case, selling the furniture as a set is a good idea. Position them in a way that allows the potential customers to envision the set in their backyard.

8. Wood Furniture

People who love working with their hands often have a thing for refurbishing old wood furniture. If you have any lying around, put it up for sale at your next garage sale and see how quickly it gets snapped up by woodworking enthusiasts.

9. Outdoor Gear

This is one of my favorite categories. My family and I love the great outdoors. This means that we almost always run through our outdoor gear and often need new ones.

Outdoor gear can be expensive. A good way to supplement that price is to simply sell off what we have already used at a garage sale and use that money to partly pay for new gear.

Things like tents, kayaks, outdoor cooking equipment, and similar items can all be sold off during spring and summer.

10. Antiques

This is a garage sale staple. If you have some antiques or vintage items you want to sell, a garage sale is the perfect place to do it. You can hold a sale solely dedicated to antiques.

You’ll be surprised at how much enthusiasts are willing to pay for rare pieces. Just make sure that they are in good condition and clean.

As you can see, it’s not “what to sell at a yard sale” that’s an issue, but more “how to price garage sale items” that will get you. Garage sale pricing is crucial if you are going to make a killing.

If you can find a way to not only sell the right items but also price them accordingly, every garage sale you hold could be a gold mine.

Garage Sale Tip – Things that Don’t Sell Well

While you might think certain items would be hot sellers, some commonly overestimated garage sale items often disappoint when it comes to actual sales. Here are five items that many people assume will bring good money but typically don’t:

Vinyl Records – While vintage vinyl has a reputation for being valuable, most common albums from the 70s, 80s, and 90s are actually difficult garage sale items to price and sell. Unless you have rare pressings or sought-after artists, most records bring in just a dollar or two, disappointing sellers who expect collector prices.

Outdated Electronics – Old VCRs, DVD players, and stereo systems might seem valuable, but they’re usually slow-moving garage sale items. Most people prefer newer technology or streaming services, making these nostalgic pieces hard to price competitively.

Encyclopedias and Reference Books – Complete encyclopedia sets were once prized possessions, but they’re now among the most challenging garage sale items to sell. With information readily available online, heavy book sets have little appeal to modern buyers.

Dated Clothing and Shoes – Unless it’s vintage or designer, used clothing is typically a low-value garage sale item. Shoes, especially, don’t sell well, as buyers prefer new footwear for hygiene and fit reasons.

HOW TO BECOME A PROOFREADER ONLINE

WHO IS THE WOMAN BEHIND PROOFREAD ANYWHERE?

I started out working a 9-to-5 job as a receptionist at a busy court reporting office back in 2009. I was so good at spotting errors that court reporters started calling me “Eagle Eyes.” As I moved up at the office, I started proofreading for court reporters as a side hustle. In 2011, I parted ways with that firm but kept my proofreading clients. I’ve been on my own ever since. As I gained experience and got more and more clients, I streamlined my proofreading method so I could work more efficiently. Eventually, proofreading became my primary source of income. My friends and family took notice and started asking me how I built my business. I released Proofread Anywhere, and then later, Transcript Proofreading: Theory and Practice, launched.

WHAT DO FREELANCE PROOFREADERS DO?

People (specifically bloggers and other business owners) are looking for passionate, detail-oriented proofreaders. Whenever words get put into print, they need to be proofread for accuracy. Someone can write a blog post or a resume (or anything, really) and read over it themselves, but they already know what they put on the page. That makes it super easy to read what you expect to be there rather than what’s actually on the page. That’s when writers can overlook a misspelled word (think their instead of there) or a missing word. So it’s always good to have someone else read over your writing. I even have someone read my blog posts before they go live. No one’s immune! It comes as no surprise, but my favorite type of proofreading is proofreading transcripts for court reporters (often referred to as legal proofreading). Anyone who’s watched crime drama TV shows has probably seen a person sitting in the front of the courtroom typing away on a little machine. That’s a court reporter, and they’re writing on a steno machine. They take down word for word what everyone in the courtroom says. Their steno notes are turned into a transcript, which then needs to be proofread before it’s handed over to the person requesting it. Transcript proofreading is a very specific niche and requires very detailed training before proofreaders start helping out court reporters.

WHAT ARE THE QUALIFICATIONS FOR FREELANCE PROOFREADING?

Surprisingly, it isn’t just about being a whiz at grammar and spelling. It’s actually about having a good work ethic. You are in charge of your own success. Your reputation will determine if you’re someone in the proofreading community who will be known for your outstanding work ethic or rather as someone who can’t be trusted to respond to emails, return a quality job, meet a deadline, and/or be honest. A good proofreader likes to read. You will be doing lots (and LOTS) of reading. If you don’t enjoy reading, you definitely won’t enjoy sitting down and picking up a 300-something-page transcript. You need a desire to learn and keep learning. If you’ve never proofread a transcript before but think you know it all already — and just need to know how to get clients — you’ll be in for a rude awakening. Court reporters can smell inexperience from a mile away. Finally, you do need to be familiar with basic grammar and spelling rules. You don’t have to be perfect at them, but if you have a hard time catching errors as you read through advertisements or magazines and such, you’ll have a very difficult time with transcript proofreading, and I wouldn’t recommend it for you. Oh – and one more thing!!  Proofreading is not a way to get rich quickly by putting in minimal effort. Transcript proofreading is a lot of work. If you’re looking for a willy-nilly little “course” to give you some general ideas on how to catch errors and make crazy cash, this isn’t for you. Transcript Proofreading: Theory and Practice isn’t designed to chuck a gazillion people haphazardly out into the world to scrounge for potential clients. It’s there to equip serious people with the serious skills needed to perform serious work.

IS ANY SPECIAL TRAINING REQUIRED?

While theoretically, anyone could call themselves a proofreader and start trying to proofread general text like term papers, blog posts, and the like, now you know that transcript proofreading for court reporters takes a different kind of skill set than general proofreading. Transcript Proofreading: Theory and Practice goes in-depth on everything, from the very basics of what makes up a transcript to how to proofread transcripts (you practice on over 3,000 real transcript pages) to marketing specifics. Even if you’ve proofread other types of text before, if you haven’t proofread a transcript before, you’ll need specific training before offering that as a service.

HOW MUCH MONEY CAN FREELANCE PROOFREADERS MAKE?

That depends on quite a few factors. Transcript proofreaders charge by the page, so your rate will depend on how quickly you can work through a transcript — and with what accuracy you can do that. Blasting through a transcript ultra-fast and leaving loads of errors in your wake won’t make you more money in the long run because it will ruin your reputation. It’s best to start slowly and build up speed. It also depends on your goals. Do you want to quit your job and stay at home? Some graduates of Transcript Proofreading: Theory and Practice consistently earn more than $2,000 a month and can stay at home with their kids. Others don’t want to quit their jobs but appreciate the extra cash to pay off debt faster or have more wiggle room in their budgets. There are students making $4,000 and more a month – working part-time.  Others are making 6-figures annually.  It’s your business. You decide how much you want to proofread. That kind of flexibility is exactly what makes me so passionate about the work.

WHAT IF I TRY IT AND HATE IT?

Then be honest but kind to yourself. You won’t know until you try, so if it seems interesting to you, give it a fair shot. Don’t quit too early, but if you get into it and honestly don’t enjoy it, that’s a good sign it’s time to move on. Some folks get started and LOVE every minute of it. Others start and find out it’s really not something they enjoy. That’s why I break the training into levels. Students invest in each level as they go — not all upfront. So if someone decides it’s not something he or she wants to continue, then they’d simply not invest in the next level of training. Easy! Now, while there have been students — and even graduates — who have decided proofreading just isn’t for them, the knowledge and confidence they gain through the community and the training (especially the marketing training) gave them the confidence to branch out into other freelance skills. Some stick with proofreading, but instead of proofreading transcripts, they do other types of proofreading. Others find a completely different area of the freelance world they really love, like transcribing or writing. We even encourage branching out because more skills always translate to more money.

Facebook Marketplace

Selling baby clothes on Facebook Marketplace is another great option. Go through your baby clothes and pick the ones that are in great condition or ones that still have the tags on. Next, take some quality pictures to showcase the clothes. Now open Facebook Marketplace and click on the “create new listing” tab on the left side of your screen. From here you can upload your photo and add the price and other item details. 

The Real Real 

If your baby boy or girl (or your generous mother-in-law) has a taste for designer clothes, then The Real Real might be the right place for you to sell. Think Gucci onesies or Burberry sundresses. Before you can start selling, you will have to provide some personal info including your name, email, phone number, and zip code. Next, you can choose between setting up a “concierge appointment” where you can have someone pick up your items from your home or you can print a free shopping label and send your items. 

Places to Sell Used Baby Gear

If you have a closet or garage full of old baby gear such as strollers, carriers, monitors, and beyond, you can also clear up some space by selling all of those items. 

Craigslist

If you’re looking to sell off some of your used baby gear, Craigslist is a great place to start. To list an item, simply select the type of posting (for sale by owner), choose a category for your listing (“baby and kid stuff,” or whatever is most relevant), and then fill in all of the item details including a picture of the item. There are lots of easy ways to make money from home—I do—but that wasn’t always the case. There was a time when we struggled financially to make ends meet. Fortunately, I found a side hustle that has since turned into a lucrative business. I was one of the lucky ones who found a way to turn a hobby into a business opportunity.

If you struggle like we did, you may need to find a way to make a little extra cash or even replace your income. But where do you even start? What could you do to make money from home? You don’t want to stuff envelopes, and those online companies are all a sham. This can leave you wondering what options you have to make money on the side.

Sometimes, you need to think outside of the box. There are opportunities all around you, but you need to just look for them! To help kick-start your work-from-home thoughts, we’ve rounded up some of the best ideas! These are all things you can do that will make you money from home.

Many of these won’t make you wealthy, but when you find one or two that work, this can positively impact your monthly income. There are lots of creative ways to make some money from home. Check out my top picks below!

MAKE MONEY AT HOME BY STARTING A SIDE BUSINESS

There is nothing like being your own boss. However, knowing what kind of small business to start can pose a challenge. These ideas will allow you to use your own hobbies and talents and turn them into a way to make more money. Some of these may require a business license, so look into local regulations before you begin, or check out a free resource for those getting started, such as AmericasSBDC.org, SCORE.org, and Startup101.com.

1. Start a blog. Believe it or not, blogging can be a lucrative way to bring money into your home. The trick is to blog about your passion! I have been blogging for years and have continuously made six figures per year.

In just a few minutes, you can create your own blog and be on your way to making money blogging, too!

2. Open a Daycare. You need to love kids before you consider this option. You will need to be able to prepare meals, teach kids, and have a safe home environment.

If this interests you, visit your state’s childcare license office to learn what it takes to become accredited. Share with friends to help them spread the word that you are open for business!

3. Home-Based Business. I’m sure you’ve heard of many consultant-based businesses, such as Thirty-One Gifts, Mary Kay, Party Lite, Pampered Chef, etc. These are great companies that allow you to set your own hours, get out and meet new people, and still bring in a little spending money.

My one tip for this type of opportunity is to do your homework so you fully understand the start-up costs and what you will need to do to maintain your consultant status.

4. Become a tutor. You might be able to make money tutoring students. From elementary school to college, there are those who need a bit more help on various topics. Check with your local school and college to find people whom you can help.

You might also see if you meet the qualifications to work for VIPKID, where you teach English to children in China.

5. Teach a trade/craft. Many people want to learn new hobbies and are more comfortable with hands-on learning. If you know guitar, you could teach lessons. If you are a baker, you can teach others to decorate cupcakes. If you know how to sew, you could teach basic skills or specialized skills. What skills do you have that you could teach others?

6. Lawn maintenance. Do you love being outdoors? You might want to consider mowing, weeding, and gardening as a way to earn extra money.

7. Become an Uber or Lyft driver. Do you have reliable transportation? This is a really popular trend right now and a simple way to make money. You are able to set your own hours and make good money doing it. You can work for Uber or Lyft to get started.

8. Call center employee. When you place a call to a company, it is typically directed to an employee (who is probably working from their home) instead of an office setting. You would need to set up an area where you can work and follow a script while taking calls from customers. The pay varies, depending upon the type of company for which you work. If you are interested in this option, here are some sites you can visit to learn more: workingsolutions.com, liveops.com, or sykes.com.

9. Dog walker/sitter. If you would like to get out of your house and love animals, you could be a dog walker or pet sitter. Furbabies are considered family members by many, and people will pay to have companionship or weekend sitters for their pets.

10. Pet trainer. If you are good at training and comfortable with animals, you could become a pet trainer. This can include obedience or even fun tricks. There’s plenty of information online,, or you could volunteer with local companies and organizations to learn more.

11. Home organization services. Many people lack the ability to organize. You can help people clean and organize spaces in their homes.

12. Clean homes. If you don’t organize well, but you can clean, you could become a house cleaner.

13. Balloon animals. I recently ran into an old friend at an event and she had picked up a side job as a balloon animal creator! It was an affordable investment, and she makes excellent money creating animals at corporate events, parties, and more.

14. Party planner. This is where your super-original party ideas can make you money. Become a party planner for birthdays, anniversaries, and more.

15. Become a handyman. If you can fix just about anything, your handyman (or handywoman) services can bring in some good money.

16. Mover. People hate to move, so they pay people to help load and unload moving vans and trucks. I’ve seen people paid upwards of $50+ an hour just to load or unload trucks.

17. Shovel snow. During the winter months, you can make some money shoveling snow from driveways and walkways. If you have a truck with a plow, you could even work for companies to clear parking lots.

18. Personal shopper. Not everyone likes to shop. You could visit the grocery store and do the weekly shopping for others.

19. Photographer. You don’t have to be a high-end photographer to take photos at birthday parties, events, and other occasions.

20. Power Washer. You can offer to power wash driveways, decks, and more if you own a power washer.

21. Paint. Most people don’t like to paint. You could paint rooms, furniture, and more.

22. Sell baked goods. As mentioned above, you could teach someone to bake. However, you might be able to sell baked goods as well.

23. Start a bounce house business. Parents and schools always rent bounce houses for parties and events. Invest in the larger houses, and you can set them up and take them down at various events.

24. Makeup artist. If you are good with makeup, you can freelance as a makeup artist for events and special occasions, such as weddings.

25. Face painting/tattoos. It seems every kid loves to get their face painted at carnivals and parties.  Master your skills and then you can contract your services at different events.

26. Graphic design. Have an eye for design? Whether you specialize in logo design, web graphics, social media assets, or branding materials, there is always a demand for talented graphic designers by small businesses.

MAKE MONEY FROM HOME ON THE INTERNET

Sometimes, leaving home to earn money is not an option. As more companies hire remote workers, more work-from-home jobs are available.

27. Become a freelancer. If you love to create and design or are good at proofreading, you could sell your services directly on Fiverr, which is a marketplace where you can create logos, do animation, SEO analytics, and more! You can set up your shop and people will come to you, and you can also watch for people who post the type of work they are looking for.

28. Take online surveys. If you want an easy way to make money online, you should consider taking surveys. There are companies who will pay you for your opinion. Manufacturers and retailers need to know how they are performing. The best way to do that is to ask people to complete surveys for feedback. And they pay you for doing it, too!

Although there are hundreds of these companies online, not all of them are legit. The way to maximize your survey-earning potential is to join more than one company. If you want to give this idea a try, here are some of the top companies I recommend:

29. Virtual assistant. You must be highly organized if you want to consider this line of work. Many websites (even mine!) hire Virtual Assistants (VAs) to help them. A VA works for bloggers or websites. They might manage social media, check e-mail, write articles, or even help with accounting.

The hours and pay vary from site to site, but it is a nice way to pick up a few extra hours of work and some extra spending cash. Visit VirtualAssistants.com or FlexJobs to learn more about how to become a VA (keep in mind that you do have to pay a fee to join this one).

30. Become a proofreader. Proofreading is a great way to make money at home. It is perfect for moms as you truly set your own hours.

31. Ebay. If you love to search for deals, eBay might be a good deal for you. If you find a great deal on a toy on clearance, you can probably turn around and sell it on eBay for more than what you paid for it.  Another great thing to sell on eBay is children’s clothes.

Right now, the economy is so tough that parents can’t afford new clothes, so they can head to eBay and purchase them for just a few dollars per item. Whatever you decide to sell, eBay has tools to help you with determining your cost to ad layout. Just do your research and get ready to sell!

32. Freelance writing. If you love to write, you can get paid to write for large publications. In fact, many freelancers make a very good living. Read this post about How to Get Started as a Freelance Writer to learn more.

33. Transcription. Many think this is a dying line of work, but that is not the case. Documents still need to be transcribed, and people are paid to help. Learn the tricks to starting out as a transcriptionist.

34. Sell your photos. If you are a budding photographer, you can make money by selling your images. There are sites where you then sell your photos. As with any online endeavor, always read the fine print before you sign up so you know what you are getting into. Here are a couple of sites you might check out: iStockPhoto, Shutterstock, and Fotolia.

35. Data entry. With the digital age comes the need to transfer all of that content on paper into digital media. Companies actually pay people just like you to enter this for them. This is the one where you will find a LOT of scams, so make sure you are very careful before you sign up. One site you can check out is HEA-Employment.

36. Sell your wares. If you love to create items, you can sell them for cash. Learn more about selling on Etsy!

37. Set up an online store. Online retailers are making a LOT of money! While many will maintain their own inventory, you don’t have to. You can actually easily create your own online store and use drop shipping (where someone else mails out the products to the customer). I know a lot of people who do this and make a nice living at it (and have been able to quit their full-time jobs).

One site you want to check out is Shopify. It’s great because it helps you do it all – from creating your site to helping you get up and running. Shopify charges a minimal monthly fee for the connection process, but that is standard for any company that does this.

38. Review software. If you have a technological mindset, reviewing software is a simple way to make money. You need to make sure you give it a thorough review and report back your honest feedback. You can start doing this today on Software Judge.

39. Translate websites or documents. Translating documents and websites from one language to another will always be needed. You can visit Proz to get started.

40. Check out apps. A fun way to make money is by trying out new apps! Companies want to know what users think and get their feedback to make improvements (if needed). Check out UTest to learn more.

41. Become a website tester. In order to ensure your website is successful, you need to make sure it is user-friendly, which is why companies pay people to test their websites. You can sign up for free and get started right away at UserTesting.

42. Social media manager. In order to stay competitive, bloggers and companies must use social media. If you are extremely knowledgeable in marketing and strategies, you could offer your services as a social media manager.

43. Blogging editor. If owning a blog is not your thing and you really don’t want to be an assistant, you could offer editing services. Blogs want to ensure that posts are free from grammatical errors, and editors help ensure that they are.

44. Forum or Facebook group moderator. Owners of these pages don’t want to have to police and monitor them every second of the day. You can be paid to be a forum monitor. Reach out to the owner of the forums you frequent to see if they are looking for help.

45. Get paid to surf the Internet. When you’re ready to search online, use Swagbucks. You can earn points for searching the web and for other activities.

46. Use Rakuten. This site will pay you when you shop online! Just visit their site before any purchase is made, and they will give you a cut of what you spent. They even send you an actual check! Sign up with Rakuten now and get a free $10 gift card when you spend your first $25!

47. Search for coupons. If you find coupons and coupon codes, you can get paid for sharing them with others! CouponChief pays you for passing along the deals you find with others.

OTHER UNIQUE WAYS TO MAKE MONEY AT HOME

48. Flip products. If you are skilled at transforming trash into treasure, turn your skills into a way to make money! Sell your creations online or at local flea markets.

49. Write a book and sell it on Amazon. The Kindle store sells millions of copies of books every year. It is easy to create your own book, be it a short story or a novel. If you check out some of the best sellers, many have less than 50 pages in them!

You can transform your favorite 50 recipes into a book, your tricks on organizing your home – anything you want. Get started with Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing program.

50. Get paid to shop. The new way of saving money is not as much with coupons as it is with apps! You can use apps to buy the things you need, submit your receipt, and get cash back!

I’ve talked about these apps before on the site, so these are sites I trust. The ones I recommend you check out include Ibotta, Coupons.com, and Checkout51.

51. Rent your home. Join Airbnb and rent space to travelers. You are in control of who can rent your space and when.

52. Sell items on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist. If you have things you no longer need, you can sell them on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist. Just make sure you complete transactions in a safe environment.

53. Sell your hair. I know this sounds crazy, but people do buy hair! Hairsellon can get you started.

54. Rent your stuff. Believe it or not, you can get paid to rent out all sorts of things, from vehicles to books, clothes, and more! This is a great way to use an item you had to buy for ONE event that now sits gathering dust. Rent your item(s) out to others and make some money! You will want to check out RentNotBuy to learn more about getting started.

55. Become a tour guide. If you love your city, you can share that with others. You might even be able to make decent money doing it. Vayable is a great site to help get you started.

56. Become a resume writer. The right resume can help someone land the perfect job. Market your services on LinkedIn and other sites.

57. Sell your clothes. Clean out your closet and get rid of the things you no longer need. You can visit local stores, such as Plato’s Closet, which pay you for your items.

58. Have a garage sale. A garage sale is a great way to clear out the clutter and turn it into cash. I’ve made hundreds on mine — and even $1,200 one year!

59. Sell unwanted gift cards. This clears out the clutter of the cards you don’t want and puts a little money in your pocket, too! Visit Raise.com to learn more about how to sell those unwanted cards (use the code PPINCH, and you’ll get $5 free to spend on your first purchase, too).

60. Become a mystery shopper. Believe it or not, you can get paid to eat at restaurants and shop at stores. Learn more about mystery shopping.

61. House sitter. During vacation, people do not like to leave their homes unattended. You can house-sit for them. You can negotiate if this includes bringing in the mail, watering plants, turning on different lights, etc.

62. Sell plasma or blood. Believe it or not, you can sell your blood and plasma for a profit.

63. Be a mock juror. Many trial lawyers use mock jurors to get a better feel for their case and how a jury may lean based upon certain testimony and evidence. Visit eJury.com to learn more about this idea.

64. Become a phone nurse. Staff the phones for patients who call looking for help and advice. Fonemed is one resource you can look into.

65. Use your car to advertise. Companies will pay you to put advertising on your vehicle.

66. Lose weight. I know that this sounds crazy, but you can actually bet against others to lose weight!  Check out DietDebt to learn more.

67. Rate music. This won’t make you rich, but you can listen to and review songs. Visit MusicXray.

68. Answer questions. If you are knowledgeable about different topics, Ammas will pay you for answering questions.

69. Get paid to share on social media. Companies such as IZEA and PaidPerTweet pay users and bloggers to share information on social media channels.

70.  Earn money by shopping online. Rakuten will actually pay you for shopping online! Just shop as usual, and you’ll earn rewards month after month.

MAKE MONEY WITH A PART-TIME JOB

Sometimes, part-time employment can help your financial picture, too. These jobs often work around your current work schedule so as to not interfere with your regular job.

71. Food delivery. These jobs don’t pay much, but you can make some decent money in tips. You will need your own vehicle and insurance. Check out UberEats to get started.

72. Newspaper delivery. Many people still like to receive a newspaper. You can deliver papers early in the morning before the rest of your day begins.

73. Substitute teacher. This can be tricky as you might get a last-minute call out to work, but there is always a need for subs in most school districts.

74. Hotel complimentary breakfast host. When hotels offer a complimentary breakfast, they need people to set it up, keep it stocked and then clean up. As an added bonus, you can often get discounted hotel rates as well.

75. Lifeguard. Lifeguard at a private, community, or even your local public pool.

76. Referee. Schools, colleges, and local recreation leagues need refs to help run their events.

77. Holiday help. Retail stores often hire seasonal workers to help at different times of the year. These are not long-term commitments.

78. Temp agency. Become a temp, and you will get short assignments to fill in for regular staffers who may be on vacation, maternity leave, etc.

79. Personal assistant. This is a good fit if you like helping others, such as busy executives or homebound and/or disabled people who need help with shopping, chores, and more.

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM SCAMS

Of course, before you ever sign up with a company, make sure you protect yourself from scams. Here are a few things to look for:

• Watch out for pyramid schemes.
• Be leery of a company that makes you pay before they tell you what your job will be.
• Read the fine print. Know what to expect before you agree to the terms (that means don’t just click the accept button).
• Research the company at the Better Business Bureau to see if it’s accredited or if there have been complaints filed.
• Watch out for a company that is solely commission-based.

Whatever you decide to do to make money, make sure you do thorough research. Be sure the job works for you and is something you enjoy doing. And keep a flexible mindset – you may find yourself pursuing another idea if one doesn’t work out. Not all opportunities are for everyone. Good luck!

I get asked all of the time, “How can I make money at home?”  While blogging is what I do, I know that is not always the answer for everyone. If you happen to be creative, why not sell your stuff on Etsy?  Using Etsy can be a great way to make money fast!

I’m one of the least creative people I know.  I can sew a seam and a button and follow instructions, but I can’t come with a unique idea to save my soul. But, I know many of you can.

If that is you, have you ever considered selling your stuff on Etsy?  It can be a great way to supplement your income.  There are even people who make more than six figures a year – all by selling on Etsy!

Since this is not my forte, I wanted to get someone who knows this platform to help. I spoke with Lauren Keplinger recently and asked for her input.

How to get started selling on Etsy

How long have you been selling on Etsy?

I’ve been selling on Etsy for six and a half years. I got started back in September of 2012.

What is the one mistake most sellers make?

One mistake that I see new sellers make is that they put up items in their shop and then they hope for the best. They don’t have a plan for how they are going to drive traffic to their shop, and they get frustrated when things are not selling because they aren’t getting any visitors.

What is the average you may be able to make over six months?

It is super hard to have an average for sellers because Etsy sellers run the gamut from people who have one item listed in their shop and don’t care if it sells to full-time sellers make tens of thousands of dollars a month.

I can’t speak for all shops, but when I looked back at my shop for the first six months in business, I averaged just under $600 a month. However, the next six months of business (so months 6-12 of my shop), I averaged just over $3,700 a month, so while it is not an overnight process the sales and revenue can increase rapidly.

Can you sell anything on Etsy?  Is there anything you can’t sell?

Etsy caters to three categories of products — handmade, vintage, and supplies. They have specifications for what qualifies in each of those; for example, vintage items have to be over 20 years old.

Etsy does not allow sellers to sell items that are illegal, dangerous, glorifying hate, having to do with drug paraphernalia, etc.

What does your course teach that you can’t find online?

My course gives you a step by step roadmap to go from building your shop and setting everything up all the way to scaling to five and six-figure sales.

While you can find bits and pieces of information online that can be helpful, having a step by step plan for what you’ll work on at each step of the journey helps to clarify the process of building a business and reduce the overwhelm and frustration that comes with growing your shop.

Do you still use Etsy?

How is the course laid out (email day by day, take at your own pace)?

The course is five lessons laid out over six weeks. For many, the ideal job is one which allows you to make money at home.  You might need to work at home to increase income or replace lost income; there are many options available.  You might try being a freelance writer or even start a blog.

While I’ve shared several great ideas in the past, another one I want to share with you is transcription.  It is the type of work that is a fit for many people — especially moms who want to make money to help their family.

I recently visited with Janet Shaughnessy, who has a great course that teaches people how to make money at home as a transcriptionist.  Her course – TranscribeAnywhere  – has taught countless people how to get started in this line of work.

I asked Janet some of the questions I had about the course, in the hope that it would help you as well.

WORK FROM HOME AS A TRANSCRIPTIONIST

What is Transcription?

Transcription is the art of turning audio and video files into text documents. You listen to recorded content and type it into a text document to be used in some different ways. There are general, legal, and medical transcriptionists.

Medical transcription is on the decline due to the adoption of the electronic medical record and outsourcing. I don’t offer those services any longer, and I certainly don’t teach it.

Do you need any background?

To succeed as a transcriptionist, you must be:

A fast and accurate typist. You must also be proficient in spelling, grammar, and punctuation.  You must know about the internet and have critical thinking skills (research) and familiarity with the hardware and software needed to provide transcription services.

These skills can all be learned or improved upon with training and practice. However, if you’re not self-motivated and self-disciplined, you’re probably not a good candidate for transcription work.

Is this still something companies need?

I always smile when I hear this question. Although one of the myths out there is that voice recognition software has reduced the need for transcriptionists, nothing could be further from the truth.

With the proliferation of audio and video content being produced on a daily basis via the internet, the need has actually increased! Voice recognition technology has to “learn” one voice.  It can’t handle multiple voices. There is no way it can format a document. It can’t punctuate nor differentiate context. These are all things that a qualified transcriptionist does.

Who would do well as a transcriber?

Anyone who has the skills mentioned above or the commitment to become skilled. You also need to have an entrepreneurial spirit, since you’ll be self-employed, as well as not mind working alone most of the time.

What does it cost to get started?

The basic cost of hardware and software is around $90 – $100. Training prices are all over the place. There are courses for thousands of dollars, and there are courses for $25. At Transcribe Anywhere, our mission is to offer the most comprehensive, yet cost-effective, training available.

Do I need special equipment?

You need transcription software and a headset. A foot pedal is optional, but most transcriptionists prefer using one.

What type of income could I expect to make?

A beginning transcriptionist should expect to start somewhere in the $15/hour range. That’s just a general guideline. Keep in mind that we’re not usually hourly employees. We’re self-employed. We go into a lot of detail in our courses about how to charge for our services, but generally speaking, a good transcriptionist works on a 4:1 ratio — meaning it will take four hours to transcribe one hour of audio or video.

We set our rates according to that guideline. Depending on how much time you have available or want to devote to work will determine how much you can make. Zoom Transcription Services made six figures last year. Did I start out making that much? No! I worked hard and built up my business over time.

Is this line of work good for anyone?

Nope. It’s not for everyone. If you don’t have an above-average command of the English language and aren’t willing to work hard to improve and expand your skills, you won’t succeed as a transcriptionist.

There is nothing like being your own boss.  It’s even better when you can make money from home – even sitting on your sofa.   I’ve shared several ideas about ways you can make money from home. I’ve talked about surveys, selling items on eBay and even creating a blog.  One of the items on our list is freelance writing.

Today I am thrilled that I get to share an interview with Holly Johnson.  She is a professional freelance writer.  I hope you pick up some great tips from her and can then start your own journey! Why should someone try freelancing?

Freelancing can be a great way to unleash your creative side and earn money in your spare time. If you’re a good writer already, you might be surprised by how much you can earn writing web content on the web. And despite what anyone says, jobs are plentiful and all over the place.

You just need to know how to find them.

Another reason to try freelancing: It’s almost risk-free. All you need to get started is a computer, an internet connection, and an email account. These are things most people have anyway.

Can anyone do this?

Can you write? If so, you can write for a living. The most important thing to remember is, you must be able to express yourself in a smart and readable way. Having good research skills and an eye for detail can also help you earn and keep the type of jobs you want.

Also remember, your writing will improve over time if you practice enough. Once you land a few “starter jobs,” you can increase the caliber of your writing over the weeks and months. All it takes is perseverance, a lot of patience, and some knowledge of where to find those first jobs in the first place. Of course, all of these concepts are covered in my course!

Do you have to be a great writer to freelance?

Honestly, no. It certainly helps, but you don’t have to be the world’s best writer to get freelance jobs at all. Especially when it comes to “beginner jobs,” you can find work pretty easily no matter your skill level.

If you want to earn a lot of money, on the other hand, being an excellent writer is key. Still, the best thing you can do is practice with smaller jobs and build your skills along the way. Over time, everyone gets better!

Is this something you can do in your part-time?

You can definitely freelance in your spare time. Although I have been a writer for many years, I didn’t start freelancing for side income until 2011. At the time, I worked anywhere from 40 – 50 hours per week!

The great thing about freelancing is that you can normally do it on your own timeline. When I created content and worked full-time, I would work on my side hustle in the morning or on weekends. As long as you get the work done and turn it in on time, it doesn’t matter which hours you work.

This is a huge plus for working parents or people who take care of kids full-time. There are very few part-time jobs that let you work any hours you want and from the comfort of your own home!

What does it cost to get started?

The best part about freelancing is that the start-up costs are minimal. It helps to have a blog of your own, but the start-up costs there are only a few hundred dollars per year. And really, you don’t even need a blog to give it a whirl.

What you really need is a good work ethic and the drive to succeed. Beyond those qualities, you need a computer and an internet connection. That’s it, and that’s no joke.

What is the average income one might expect to earn for the articles they write?  

Most new writers can expect to earn $50 – $100 for their content, but it goes up quickly from there. Over time, you should be able to earn $200 – $1,000 per piece of online content you create. I started in the $75 – $150 range, but earn on the very high end now. It all depends on the type of work you get, your level of experience, and the rates you can negotiate yourself.

What has being a freelance writer allowed you to do?

Working as a blogger and freelancer has allowed me to build the kind of lifestyle I always wanted. Where I once had 15 – 20 personal days off each year. I am now able to take as much vacation as I want. Where I once had to dress up for work and commute both ways, I’m now able to work anywhere no matter how I look.

Because I’m the one in charge of my time, I’m able to spend a lot more time with my kids. I get them off and on the bus each day, spend all of their school breaks with them and take time off with them any time I want. I never had that kind of flexibility in my old job.

Do you have one amazing tip you could share with our readers (which may or may not be in your course)?

My biggest tip is to think outside of the box when it comes to the type of work you’ll accept. Far and away, one of my biggest sources of income is ghostwriting. Few people consider the prospect of writing speeches and content for other, busier people, yet this is a thriving business. Plus, you can make bank doing it!

Another tip to consider: Ask yourself which of your hobbies could lead to paid work. I cover how to find your “niche” thoroughly in my course (along with ghostwriting), but I feel too few people realize how important this is. Once you know what your niche is, you can figure out how to get jobs in that niche. Too many people fail to consider their niche, then fail because they try to do too many things. For most writers, finding a niche is key.
