To be honest, DIY gift wrap storage ideas can be a pretty odd topic for most. But if you take gifting as seriously as we do in my household, you have definitely found yourself stuck with leftover gift wrap, which always seems to disappear the next time you need to use it.

You might have tried to store it without clutter, only for it to disappear after it was cut from the budget. You are not alone if you are looking for ways to tame your runaway gift-wrapping supplies in style.

My Budget DIY Storage Ideas

The following budget DIY gift wrap storage ideas provide tips and tricks to declutter your home while organizing your gift wrapping gear to streamline the process without significantly increasing your budget. You’ll be able to view your wrapping inventory at a glance and make informed decisions about what you need and don’t need.

File Storage

Most wrapping paper is stored horizontally in rolls because it’s easier to sustain them that way. You don’t have to throw away the smaller pieces that have been cut off the roll or stress about them anymore.

This vertical DIY storage solution enables you to store them as sheets instead of rolls. It is also great for gift bags. You can see what you want and pull it out quickly and efficiently.

File storage solutions exist all over the house; your simple magazine racks set on their spines will work for organizing your gift bags and small pieces of unused gift wrap that have been cut off the roll. You can also turn a bookshelf on its side and use it for the longer pieces.

Hooks and Brackets

Hooks are versatile storage tools that facilitate a host of storage options. I have used them to hang baskets and as brackets to hang wooden dowels around which wrapping paper can be spooled. Besides keeping the gift wrap organized, this solution also allows me to cut the pieces I need without taking the whole roll down.

I don’t like to damage my walls, so I go for the least intrusive options. A good number of my gift wrap options are supported by removable command hooks. They are surprisingly strong and can handle heavy weights. Some can even hold up to 10 lbs on just adhesive alone. This is more than sufficient for your typical gift wrapping supplies.

You can also install a peg board that can accommodate as many hooks as you need. I hang my gift bags on different pegs according to size, so it’s easier to pick the appropriate size without rummaging through a bunch of bags to find what I need.

Drawer Storage

Drawers allow you to keep everything tidy and out of the way. Drawer gift wrap storage opportunities are abundant in the home, from the empty dresser drawer in your guest room to beds with built-in drawers, cabinets and storage boxes that can be slipped under the furniture and hidden away from sight.

These spots are great for organizing gift bags and storing wrapping paper rolls out of sight. It also creates space.

Storage Caddy

This is ideally a plastic storage container. Any deep storage box that can hold wrapping paper and gift bags will do. It can have dividers so you can separate your items. The cover can also be partitioned to store gift tags, tape, and other gift-wrapping accessories in an organized manner.

I have two tips for efficient use of storage caddies:

• Group your gift wrap storage inventory by type, applicable events, holidays, colors or whatever makes sense in the grand scheme of things.
• Make cool labels that you wouldn’t mind looking at if you stored your gift wrap on an open shelf.

There are also some handy storage containers that you can hide away under the bed! When the storage container fits under other furniture, it can keep everything out of the way.

Consider a gift wrap organizer that can fit up to 24 rolls, has useful pockets for all of your accessories and can easily fit under the bed.

Don’t have money in the budget for this kind of wrapping paper storage? Don’t worry! Even laundry hampers can be repurposed and used as storage caddies. They can accommodate rolls of wrapping paper in the closet or your designated wrapping station.

Behind the Door Storage

I love this option because I get to optimize space that would otherwise be unused, reducing clutter yet allowing everything to be easily accessible. It can be as easy as mounting a peg board behind the door or purchasing a double-sided hanging gift wrap organizer with storage pockets.

This simple DIY storage station can be created in two ways: hanging the supplies on the door or the wall that the door opens toward. The idea is to have them out of the way when they are not in use. They are well hidden between the door and the wall when the door is opened, and they remain organized and neat when the door is closed.

It’s an excellent place to store gift wrapping accessories that you’re always looking for when it’s wrapping time, such as scissors and tape. You can mount storage baskets on hooks behind the door or install an elaborate gift wrap organizer.

This door doesn’t have to be the main room door. Hanging wrapping paper storage can be added to linen closets, wardrobes, and pantry doors as well. Wire baskets, hooks, and bins can be fixed to the inside of these doors. Everything is kept in one place with easy access without cluttering the room with paper rolls and gift wrapping supplies.

Storage Baskets

HOW TO USE A PUMPKIN CARVING STENCIL

Cut off the top of the pumpkin and clean it out, like you would when making any carving.  Then, print the stencil you want and tape it to the front of your pumpkin.  Punch marks on the dots you see on the template.  Remove the templated and toss it. Give me a pumpkin roll rather than pumpkin pie!  I am not a fan of pie in any way.  But, I still love pumpkin flavors and desserts.

Ingredients

CAKE

• ¼ cup powdered sugar, to sprinkle on a towel
• ¾ cup all-purpose flour
• ½ teaspoon baking powder
• ½ teaspoon baking soda
• ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
• ½ teaspoon ground cloves
• 3 large eggs, at room temperature
• 1 cup granulated sugar
• 2/3 cup pure pumpkin
• Pinch of salt

FILLING

• 1 8oz package of cream cheese
• 1 cup powdered sugar
• 6 table spoons butter, softened
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• Powdered sugar (optional for decoration)

Instructions

1. 1. Preheat oven to 375F. Grease 15 x 10 inch jelly roll pan; line with wax paper. Grease and flour paper.
   2. Sprinkle thin, cotton kitchen towel with powdered sugar (use enough so the cake will not stick to towel).
   3. Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves and salt on a small bowl. Beat eggs and granulated sugar in large mixer until thick. Beat in pumpkin. Stir in flour mix until well combined. Spread evenly into prepared baking sheet.
   4. Bake for 13-15 minutes or until top of cake springs back when touched. (if using dark pan, begin checking for doneness around 11 minutes).
   5. Immediately loosen and turn cake out onto prepared towel. Peel off wax paper. Roll up the cake and towel together, starting with the narrow end. Cool completely.
   6. For filling, beat cream cheese, powdered sugar, butter, and vanilla in a small bowl until creamy and smooth.
   7. Unroll cake and spread cream cheese filling over the cake. Re-roll cake. Wrap in plastic wrap and place in refrigerator for at least an hour.
   8. Sprinkle with powdered sugar before serving, if desired.

What makes this treat great is how simple it is to make.  It will take just a few minutes to whip up a batch, making it the perfect last minute Halloween treat!

• 1 bag of Orange Melting Candies
• Wax paper

   2. In a medium size bowl combine the softened butter, peanut butter, sugar, brown sugar, egg, vanilla and sour cream.

1. In a smaller separate bowl combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt.
2. Mix well and slowly fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients stirring slowly.
3. Add in the 1 cup of chocolate chips and mix well.
4. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto the greased cookie sheets and bake 9-11 minutes.
5. Remove the cookies from the oven and top each warm cookie with one Rolo and one candy eye on top of the Rolo.
6. The heat from the cookie will melt the Rolo slightly allowing the candy eye to stick.

As a mom, I love finding fun and creative ways to celebrate special occasions with my family, and it’s that time of year again when I get to make a family favorite, my Valentine’s Day cake pops!

Making this recipe with my children is a fun family activity, regardless of their age. Everyone can help make the batter, shape the cake pops and decorate them with sprinkles and toppings. Valentine’s Day Cake Pops: An Easy And Fun Valentine’s Day Tradition

Ingredients

• 1 box of white cake mix (red velvet cake is popular as well)
• 1/2 cup vegetable oil
• 3 large eggs
• 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
• 1 cup water
• 2 tablespoons butter, melted and cooled to room temperature
• 8 ounces of softened cream cheese or frosting
• 24 Lollipop sticks
• Sprinkles, candy melts, or other decorations of your choice

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan with butter, cooking spray, or line it with parchment paper.
2. In a large bowl, mix together the cake mix, oil, eggs, vanilla extract and water with a hand mixer until combined.
3. Pour the cake batter into the prepared pan and bake for 25 to 30 minutes (depending on your oven) or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Let cool completely before making your cake pops.
4. Once cooled, crumble the cake into a large bowl. Stir in the melted butter and cream cheese frosting until fully combined. The dough should be slightly crumbly, but soft and moist.
5. Scoop out 1-2 tablespoons of the cake mixture and roll into balls in the palm of your hand or use or two spoons to shape the mixture into small cake balls, about 1.5 inches in diameter, then form them into hearts.
6. Place the balls on a lined plate or baking sheet and refrigerate for at least 20 minutes. To cool faster, you can also put these in the freezer.
7. Melt candy melts in the microwave according to package instructions (typically do 30-second intervals to not overcook them). Dip a lollipop stick into the melted candy or melted chocolate and insert it halfway into the cooled cake pop.
8. Dip each cake pop into the melted candy wafer and swirl around until the cake pop is fully coated. Place onto parchment paper until set. Scrape off the bottom of the cake pop on the side of the bowl to get a smooth finish by removing any excess chocolate coating.
9. Decorate with sprinkles, mini chocolate chips, or other decorations of your choice before the chocolate hardens.

Do you freeze cake pops before dipping?

Freezing cake pops before dipping them in chocolate is optional, but it can be helpful as it enables the chocolate to set faster and will also help keep its shape. I recommend either putting them in the refrigerator or freezer to keep them from breaking apart while dipping them.

Each November, we all are getting ready for the holidays. We plan what we need to buy and determine what goodies we plan to bake.

The holiday decorations get pulled out of storage, dusted off, and put on display. The music begins to play on the radio and you are in the holiday spirit.

Then, it hits you.  You need to do your holiday cards! UGH!

You start to think about them and begin to weigh your options – traditional cards you pop in the mail or digital cards.  Which should you do this year?

The difference between traditional and digital Christmas cards

The traditional Christmas card is the one you purchase at your local store. Or they could be the custom cards you order from sites such as Shutterfly or TinyPrints.

No matter where you find them, you need to sign, address and put a stamp on them. Then, they need to be dropped in the mailbox. (Some places where you can make custom cards will do all this for you — but of course, there’s a fee.)

Digital cards, however, are much different.  You can still personalize them. But rather than having cards in your hand, you will email copies to the people in your contacts list.

Why are more people sending digital Christmas cards?

We live in a crazy, busy world. And, traditional cards take more time to buy, write and mail. Not only that, but they also cost more.

Digital holiday cards are a quick and easy way to send holiday wishes — but before you click and sign up, it is important to know if they are a fit for you.

The pros of sending digital Christmas cards

More and more people are moving toward using cards they email rather than paper copies for many reasons.

Costs less

If you are into saving money, digital is the way to go. You can find cards for as little as $0.10 a person (and it goes up from there). A traditional card will cost nearly $0.50 alone, just for the postage.

Easier to send

Rather than track down everyone’s mailing address (or worry that someone moved and you don’t have their latest), you can use your contacts list.

Even if they are made from recycled materials and you, in turn, recycle them, there is still waste.

Yes, a digital card will also have a carbon footprint, but it is much less than a paper card.

Sites such as JibJab allow you to make an animated, custom card, complete with photos of the members of your family.  It can be a creative way to send a card.

There are some downsides to sending electronic cards, of course.

Less personal

When you send a holiday card, you sign it. That alone makes it seem much more personal.

Your signature on a digital card is typed, not handwritten.

Can be overlooked

Think about your inbox. During the holidays, it is filled with offers and discounts. It is easy to overlook the emails that you want to read.

So is the case with e-cards. They can end up lost in a sea of emails. Or worse, end up in the junk or spam folder.

How to save money sending Christmas cards

You may not be quite ready to pull the trigger on going digital.  However, it doesn’t mean aren’t some other affordable options for you!

Postcards

There is no reason to have to send a card tucked inside an envelope. Use a site such as Canva and make a fun postcard! You can have a personalized message typed on the back of each.

And, the cost of a postcard stamp is much less – which keeps more money in your pocket!

Buy in bulk

Visit your local warehouse and find a large box of cards at a price you can afford.

Write a quick message in each, and you’ve got a card ready to send the people on your list.

Buy them on Black Friday

Watch the sales flyers around Thanksgiving, as there will be some hot deals on cards!  Many stores will offer deep discounts.

Buy in advance each year

Make plans to shop the post-holiday sales. You’ll find all items discounted – including cards. Buy next year’s stash and get some serious savings.

Cut back the list

As time goes on, so do your connections to people. If you haven’t heard from or spoken to people in more than five years, it may be time to cut them from your Christmas card list.

Hand deliver cards

Sure, dropping the card in the mail is easier, but if you are going to see someone on your list anyway, why not deliver it in person? You save the cost of the stamp, and it is even more personal.

Stop sending them

If money is really tight, don’t feel obligated to send any Christmas cards at all.  You may have to skip them this year but can always start up again next year.

My daughter decided that she wanted to do something really different this last year.  We did some research, and she found an image of someone who appeared to be carrying herself in a box.  She told me that this is what she wanted to do.

The directions on the site we found were not easy to follow at all.  I had to figure most of it out myself.  While this was more work for me, you get the benefit as I am going to share the step-by-step instructions right here for you (along with images) so that you can make this too!

It looks like it is a lot of work, but it is actually easier than it appears!

SUPPLIES

Box (large enough for you to fit into)
Pajama pants or jeans
Rubber bands
Poly Fiber Fill (one bag)
Old shoes
Styrofoam head
Black Spray paint
Wooden dowel rod (will need to slide into the bottom of the styrofoam head)
Saw
Old Jacket or shirt
Gloves
Zombie mask (if no hair on the mask, you will need a wig or hat too)
Makeup
Backpack

DIRECTIONS

Step 1.  To begin, you will want to cut out the bottom of the box.  The hole should be just large enough so that it will slide up over your hips and rest there.  Your feet and legs will be the legs of the zombie.  Here is a view of the hole we cut in our box.

We used to take to ensure that none of the flaps moved and would stay out of the way of sliding the box up over my daughter’s hips.

Step 2. Using rubber bands (or string), tie the ends of the pajama pants or jeans closed.  Then, stuff them with fiberfill until they look good.  You will want to test them by bending them over the side of the box to make sure that they look right (not too fat or too thin).

Step 3.  Attach the shoes to the bottom of the pants.  We used the laces and tied them tightly to the pants.  You could use pins or any other method you feel will work to attach them.

Step 4. Spray paint the styrofoam head and wooden dowel both black (this will make sure they are not as visible on the costume.

Step 5. Next, you will need to dry fit the zombie head into the backpack.  zip the backpack shut and slide the dowel in from the top.  Have your child put the backpack on and determine where the head should sit (should be a little bit above your child’s head).  Then, cut off any excess so that when the dowel rod is place back into the backpack, the height will be correct.

Step 6. You will now want to give your zombie arms.  To do this. rubber band the arms of the shirt closed and then fill them with more fiberfill.  You will also want to fill the gloves with fiberfill, so that they appear to have a hand in them. It is important that you do not overfill them as you want the arms to be able to bend as they will have to be secured to the box eventually.

Add fiber fill (or towels or other lightweight items) to the backpack so that it has some shape. You want it to look like a person.

Next, place the shirt or jacket over the backpack and determine where to cut holes in the back. Make sure the BACK of the shirt or jacket faces the side of the backpack which you open.  Now, when you put the backpack on, you will not see any of it, but only the shirt itself (sorry for this blurry shot, my daughter was helping me take photos).

Attach the gloves to the shirt using rubberbands or safety pins.  Do NOT attach to the box until you put the costume on.

Step 7. Place the wig/mask onto the styrofoam head.  Now you have the body and head of your zombie!

Step 8.  To finalize, slide the box up over your legs.  Next, place the “fake legs” over the side of the box.  If they will not stay put, you can use some tape to keep them in place (just tape under the knees so you do not see it).

Put the backpack on your back and make sure the head is facing the right way.  Place the hands onto the bottom of the box and attach with tape (attaching underneath means you will not see it.

You can then have your hands hold a bag or do whatever and it will look like your zombie friend is carrying you in a box!!

Since we are Kansas City Royals fans, we turned our zombie into a KC Royals Player and then made the person in the box a NY Mets guy — complete with a black eye!  You can do whatever you want to make yours fun too!

It is the time of the year that many parents tend to play the “Santa is watching” card.  It is easy to say when your kids act up or when kids act up or happen to do something amazing. Print a nice or naughty notice and have fun with your kids this Christmas!

It is important that kids know when they are doing good things – not just being corrected for the bad.  These nice notices are great to reinforce that good behavior.  That, in turn, makes them want to earn more notices.

A nice notice to tell them they were nice to their baby brother or really helped out Mom by picking up their room can go a long way in positive reinforcement.

NAUGHTY NOTICE PRINTABLE

However, none of us are perfect.  That is the message it is essential to convey to your kids if they happen to get a Naughty Notice.  Make sure you talk it over with your kids and let them know that they are not on the naughty list, but they have been caught doing something that they should not have done.

It’s a perfect learning opportunity for your kids to take responsibility for their own actions.  If you do happen to issue a Naughty Notice, try to give Nice notice within a day or so — again to help your kids feel good about themselves.

Christmas is such a magical time for kids, and they believe for such a short time.  Try to have fun with it and do what you can to make it memorable for your kids!

A fun and easy idea for kids and even toddlers is marshmallow shamrock painting. It’s the perfect St. Patrick’s day craft project. The kids will have fun making lots and lots of shamrocks.

St. Patrick’s Day is a fun time to celebrate the coming of spring and all things green.   We love to get into the spirit of the holiday and dress in green and do some fun St. Patrick’s Day themed crafts and activities. We decided to add some shamrock painting to our list!

Having kids want to participate meant we wanted to find something fun for them.  And, who wouldn’t have fun painting shamrocks with marshmallows!?!?

You can use mini-marshmallows or regular sized marshmallows for your shamrocks. You can even switch up the shades of green for your paintings.  One fun idea is to make several three-leafed clovers and hide ONE four-leafed clover in your picture!!

HOW TO CREATE MARSHMALLOW SHAMROCK PAINTINGS

SUPPLIES

Cardstock or construction paper
Paper plate or paint pallet
Green acrylic or tempera paint
Marshmallows
Paintbrush

INSTRUCTIONS

It’s important to use cardstock or construction paper for this craft as regular paper is too thin.  Using something such as copy paper will cause it to curl, which is no fun.

Squeeze some green paint onto your paper plate or pallet.  Grab your marshmallow and squeeze it between your thumb and forefinger and dip it into green paint. Press it onto the paper like a stamp.

Let the leaves of the shamrock overlap some when you’re stamping the marshmallows. Use a paintbrush to make the stem of the clover on each one.

Use your shamrock paintings to create cards, wall art, or a school project to reinforce a lesson! Painting with the marshmallows is also an excellent sensory activity and helps reinforce the lesson by engaging multiple senses as well.

Making kid’s activities and crafts during the cold weather months has saved my sanity more than once! The kids will get restless, and when they get restless, they fight and complain. Giving them activities like this Newspaper Polar Bear makes our weekends fun and enjoyable!

Sometimes craft projects can get expensive, so I like to find crafts I can do with them that use recycled materials or things we already have around the house. This Newspaper Polar Bear craft is perfect for that! It uses an old newspaper (you know, the parts that DON’T have coupons) and some construction paper and glue, and that’s it!

We love making crafts like this when we get stuck inside.  Some other fun things we like to make are sparkly snow slime and cardboard snowmen!

HOW TO MAKE A NEWSPAPER POLAR BEAR

SUPPLIES

Old Newspaper
Black Construction Paper
Blue Construction Paper
School Glue or a Glue Stick

You will need to cut some shapes out of the newspaper to begin. Cut a large “hill” shape out, this will be the bear’s body. Then cut out a large circle for his head, a small oval for his nose, and then two small “hill” shapes for his ears. Next, use the black construction paper and cut out a small oval for his nose, two small circles for his eyes, and two small “hill” shapes for his ears.

Start with the newspaper, and glue the body piece down first, then the head, then the ears and nose. Then glue on the black pieces in whatever order you want. Once he’s fully assembled, allow him to dry for 30 minutes or more (depending on how enthusiastic you were with the glue) before displaying him.

These would be great for Christmas cards or even to frame and display as wall art during the winter months. We just make these at home, but they would also be a fun craft for teachers to do with students in class too!

As we all know, Halloween is just around the corner.  As a parent taking the kids trick-or-treating, it basically means, an endless supply of candy.

That candy is usually still around come Thanksgiving when you toss it into the trash can.  That seems like such a waste of money to me.  I’d rather give the kids a little something other than candy.

It is not even only my own kids I worry about. I know that many have allergies, and so I would hate to hand out food that might make someone sick….or something they can not eat.

That is why I created this list of 40 alternative non-candy Halloween treat ideas.  If you are like me in the way you plan Halloween, then this will be perfect for you!

40 Alternative Non-Candy Halloween Treat Ideas

1. Halloween bubbles. Lots of fun and something the kids will actually play with and use.

2. Mini Play-Doh.  Kids love this!  While I usually make my own homemade play dough, you can find these mini containers to hand out to kids.

3.  Freeze Pops.  The kids can take them home and toss them into the freezer to have a treat later on.

4. Halloween Erasers.  These are VERY affordable (just under $7 for 144).  So they not only cost less than candy, they last longer too!

11. Microwave popcorn.  This is small and won’t take up too much space in those Halloween bags!  If you buy closer to Halloween, stores often sell bags with fun Halloween decorations on them too.

12. Halloween Pencils.  A simple idea which is perfect for any trick or treater.

13. Halloween Stickers.  My kids LOVE stickers!  Give kids 2 – 3 different stickers, and they’ll be tickled!

14. Bookmarks. What a great way to instill reading for your guests!

15. Glow bracelets.  These are fun for kids of all ages!

16.  Whistles. My kids LOVE whistles!  I found these fun Skeleton whistles, which are perfect for Halloween.

17. Fun Bandaids.  If your kids are like mine, they get a scratch and need a band-aid.  These are fun!  You can get a box and give 2 or 3 to each trick-or-treater.

18.  Rubber Duckies.  My kids still get a kick out of rubber duckies!!

19. Bouncy Balls.  I don’t know what it is about balls, but my kids love them!

20. Glow-in-the-Dark Sticky Eyes.  My oldest told me that this is perfect for 10 and 11 year old kids (so there you’ve got an expert opinion).

21.  Mandarin oranges with faces.  Instead of giving a sweet treat, give a healthy one instead.  Draw fun pumpkin faces on your oranges to give to the kids.

22.  Mini boxes of raisins.  Still something for them to eat – but not nearly as sweet!

23.  Mini crayons.  Kids love to draw and color, so these are perfect!

24. Slide whistles.  I mentioned whistles above, but these are a little different in that they are slide whistles.

25. Spinning Tops.  A fun toy for kids (ages 3 and up).

26. Mini slinkies.  I still pay with these when my kids bring them home (shhh….don’t tell them).

27. Slap bracelets.  These take me back to my own pre-teen years!  Kids still love them!

28. Kids’ Mustache. These are a lot of fun for kids!

29. Silly Straws.  Always a hit!

30. Wind Up Toys.  These little toys are fun for kids of all ages.

31. Mini notepads.  You could give one of these along with a pencil (see above).

32.  Mini Yo-Yos.  I still have yet to master a yo-yo — but my kids do great!

33.  Vampire teeth.  What is Halloween without Vampire teeth?

34. Wax Lips.  I remember these OH so well when I was young! (These are a bit more expensive, so might be better for a smaller gathering of kids).

35. Stretchy Skeletons.  These are also a bit more expensive, but could be fun for the kids attending your party (rather than to hand out to trick-or-treaters).

36.  Stress balls. These mini stress balls are a lot of fun (we have a large one and my kids love it).

37. Friendship rope bracelets.  My seven year old is a HUGE fan of these kids bracelets!

38. Porcupine Balls.  Can’t go wrong with these!

39. Silly Bandz.  These are not as popular as they once were, but kids still love them.

40. Finger Puppets.  These are adorable!

Ingredients

• 1 Box of French Vanilla Pudding Mix
• 1 Jar of Marshmallow Fluff
• 2 Cups Milk
• Food Coloring/Dye
• Sprinkles
• Marshmallow Peeps

Instructions

1. In a mixing bowl, combine the pudding mix and the two cups of milk.
2. Mix well or until no lumps appear, and then set aside.
3. Put the Marshmallow Fluff into a saucepan.
4. Slowly heat until the fluff reaches a liquid state.
5. Quickly pour the fluff into the pudding mixture and stir immediately.
6. Add 4-5 drops of food coloring (you can make your own colors).
7. Pour into dishes and add sprinkles and a Peep!
8. Keep in mind that the French vanilla pudding will make the color appear slightly different. For example, in this picture, we actually used 4-5 drops of red dye and it turned out orange.

St. Patrick’s Day can be such a fun holiday! But, if you don’t have a lot of time, or just aren’t crafty, it can be tough to celebrate with your kids. Don’t break the bank, and don’t stress about big projects – just use some of these simple ideas to make the holiday special!

This is the simplest craft I have ever done.  It took just four hours from start to finish!  This is perfect for a last-minute, shoot-i-forgot-it’s-St.-Patrick’s-Day-tomorrow, shirt.

All you need is a shirt (our was $2.97 from Walmart), green acrylic paint (we found ours for $0.50 at Walmart in the craft section), a printed picture of a shamrock that you can cut out, and a foam brush.  Search for a large shamrock online.  Cut it out and then set it on the shirt.  Hold it in place while you brush green paint along the edges.  Allow it to dry and you’ve got a simple St. Patrick’s Day shirt!

Fancy pancakes are all the rage on Pinterest right now. I love them! Truth is, I have a hard time just getting my pancakes cooked without burning, so I’m never going to be able to make a fancy pancake. BUT I can dye pancake batter green, and I can use a shamrock cookie cutter to cut out a perfect shamrock! Make breakfast fun on St. Patrick’s Day without needing an art degree with these cute pancakes!

If you want a fun treat to send in the kid’s lunch boxes on St. Patricks Day, we have a super simple solution! Rainbow Twizzlers are sold year-round, and are the perfect treat for this holiday! Add some Rolos for the gold at the end of the rainbow, stick them in a clear treat bag, and twist and tie it shut – and you have the perfect treat! No special skills are needed!

If you need a fast treat, or just get to the end of St. Patrick’s Day and realize you’ve done nothing special, you can whip up this treat in less than five minutes! Lucky Charms Treats. It’s exactly the same as Rice Krispie Treats, you just substitute the rice puffs for Lucky Charms. Simple as that! We used a special edition of Lucky Charms that are all green and gold. My husband has raved about these since I made them – they’re not just for kids!

This one is so much fun – my little girl just loved it! With dinner, on St. Patrick’s Day, you can make things fun very, very easily with Rainbow Water (or lemon-lime soda). Simply fill the ice tray the night before, and add just one drop of food coloring to each ice cube. The next day, when you’re ready to serve, simply put one cube of each color into a cup full of water or lemon-lime soda! It’s so colorful and fun!

I love making Halloween treats!  These melting ghosts were another new one which came to me when I happened to find Cookies and Creme Striped cookies on the store shelf!

Just add a strawberry and some white almond bark to make your own fun melting ghosts! I love having the cookie act as the base, which holds the strawberry in place.  It also makes it a bit easier for little hands to hold.

Ingredients

• Cookies & Cream Striped Cookies
• Strawberries
• White almond bark
• Black icing (gel or other type)
• Waxed paper

1. Line a cookie sheet with waxed paper.
2. Place the cookies onto the sheet, with the white side up.
3. Cut the top off of the strawberries and place one on each cookie, pointed side up.
4. Melt 2 – 3 bars of almond bark (I do this in the microwave in 30-second increments, so it does not scorch).
5. Pour the almond bark over the top of the strawberry, so it runs down. You want it to look a bit messy.
6. Allow to set for 30 minutes.
7. Add in black eyes and a mouth.
8. Serve and enjoy!

Skeleton bones.  It is one fun way to get creative this Halloween!!! With all of the parties that are going on, you have plenty of chances to make more than one fun treat.

This is one my kids, and I love to make together. It takes the simple idea of a pretzel rod, but in a smaller form.  Adding marshmallows turns these treats into fun little skeleton bones!

1. First, place your almond bark into a microwave-safe bowl and melt (4 cubes will take around 1 min 30 sec).
2. While that is melting, break the pretzels into various sizes so that your bones are of varying lengths.
3. Push on a mini marshmallow onto each end to make your bone.
4. Once melted, cover the sticks with the bark. This is a messy (but fun) task. Be careful as the mini marshmallows sometimes fall off, but you can just put them back on.
5. Place the bones on wax paper on a cookie sheet so they can dry.
6. When dried, you can ‘break off’ the drips and over cover, and your bones will be ready to serve!

These spider web pretzels are a fun snack idea!  My girls and I love to get into the kitchen and have fun being creative.  We were making all sorts of fun Halloween treats when I thought about this one.

It takes just two ingredients to make them.  You need to treat them a bit more delicately, as the chocolate can break off (add in a few more pretzels to yours and it will give them some stability).

Ingredients

• Chocolate Almond Bark
• Baggie
• Pretzels
• Wax Paper

Instructions

1. Tear off a piece of waxed paper and set it on a baking sheet or another flat surface.
2. Arrange pretzels onto the paper. Make sure that all of the tops meet in the middle and spin out from there.
3. Place 2 – 3 blocks of almond bark in a bowl and microwave until melted. I would warm for 30 seconds in increments, to ensure you do not scorch it.
4. Stir chocolate until all melted and well mixed.
5. Place the baggie in a tall glass and open – wrapping the edges of the baggie. This holds it open so you can pour in the chocolate.
6. Cut off one corner of the baggie. Do not cut off too much or the chocolate will run out.
7. Place a large circle of chocolate on the center of your “web.” This will connect the pretzels together.
8. Run circles of chocolate around the pretzels, creating a web-like effect.
9. Allow cooling for 20 – 30 minutes.
10. Very carefully peel back the waxed paper.
11. Enjoy!

Ingredients

• Pretzel Rods
• White Almond Bark
• Halloween Sprinkles
• Wax Paper

Instructions

1. Rip off a sheet of wax paper and put on a cookie sheet, tray or plate.
2. Then, melt the almond bark in the microwave. I used 3 cubes to create around 8 – 10 pretzel rods.
3. Once melted, dip the pretzel rod into the bark and use a spoon to help spread it so that the rod is covered at least 1/2 way.
4. Hold the pretzel rod over a bowl and shake on the sprinkles. Rotate the rod in a circle while shaking so that you can get all sides covered equally.
5. Place the covered rods onto the wax paper to allow the almond bark to harden.
6. Enjoy!

• Ritz Crackers (2 for each spider)
• Pretzel sticks
• Raisins
• Peanut Butter (can opt for Hummus instead)

1. First, break the pretzels in half in order to create the legs.
2. Then, spread the peanut butter onto both crackers.
3. Lay the pretzel legs onto one of the crackers with 4 on each side, to create the legs.
4. Next, place the other cracker on top of the one with the pretzel legs.
5. Then, using some peanut butter, stick on 2 raisins to create the eyes

Notes

If your child has a peanut allergy, you can use another product such as hummus or even chocolate spread.
